The Dot

While teaching first grade, one of our weekly stories was Peter H. Reynolds's The Dot. I fell in love with Vashti and her adventure in realizing she is an artist!
This year our class explored this book and topic in September for National Dot Day! We read the story and talked a little about Pointillism. "Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image." (Wikipedia)
The students were given q-tips and corks to create their own dots as well as a variety of colors of paint. We discussed how God has made each of us different and special. Just like Vashti, we should give everything a good try! The students had a wonderful time being artists and creating their masterpieces.
To match the story, each child's artwork was "framed" in swirly curly gold, just like Vashti's.
