Reading

I love reading! Nothing is more relaxing than finding a comfy spot and getting lost in a good book!

As a teacher, one of my goals is to help children fall in love with reading too! This starts early in a child's life! A child's vocabulary and concepts of print increase the more they are read to!

Each week we have a Bible story and a weekly theme. I put a lot of time into planning good read alouds for my class. Sometimes I read to my class while others times I use my laptop to let students listen to other readers sharing stories (this helps too if I can not get my hands on a physical copy of a book I want to share!).

Each time we read a book we write the title on a small book clipart and add it to our reading wall. Our first goal is to make it to 100 books! To help us keep count, we use stickers and tens frames to count each book! The kids enjoy watching the reading wall fill up and to see how many more books to read to reach our goal!

Each time we hit our goal (100 books) we throw a special party! We are only 14 books away right now and they are asking every day how much longer until we celebrate! I LOVE having kids excited about reading!

Another way I try to encourage reading at home is to send home simple reading logs. Yes, I know right now I teach 4k and they are not reading on their own. This is just a way to motivate families to read together. Each month a new log goes in the students' green take home folder. As they read together, they color in a picture! I give a simple "prize" each month for those that participate.

My public school experience was in a school where a majority of my students were living in poverty. Many did not have books at home to read. This broke my heart and led me to create "Book Buddy Bags".  Each bag contained a book to read (independently or as a family) as well as an activity to do. I reused this idea for my preschoolers too! Their bags had more hands-on activities that were age-appropriate and lots of FUN! I started sending this bags home around March  and they were a big success!
